Think micro-ambitions: the skill of painful consistency

Focus on consistency.

It’s 9 am, day one of my summer vacation.

It’s not that I don’t want to relax in the sun and do absolutely nothing. But I got used to doing all my productive writing in the morning, vacation come or go.

I want to finally take my writing more seriously. And the best way to do it is still to do it (sprinkling Amelia Earhart vibes all over my life).

Being a creative, writer, side hustler or part-time creator sounds extremely exciting. However, underneath all the smoke and mirrors (aka social media) creator life is boring as hell.

Come rain or come sunshine, the habits you grow are the foundation of success.

Think micro-ambitions

If success is consistency, then what we all need to do is stop envisioning the big things we want to achieve and hammer down on the small steps.

And so often, these small steps need to be mastered repeatedly to take fruit.

In other words, do one task that will bring you ahead over and over (and over) again.

But Laura, it sounds so boring, I will lose interest and quit.

Well, in reality, it is as boring as you make it out to be. If you enjoy what you are working towards, if you enjoy the little steps it will be an adventurous journey.

But I am a creative, I need it to be exhilarating

Freedom, my dear creative, comes after mastery.

Take my dog as an example (hear me out). I tell him all the time: Only when he masters the art of recall, will he get more freedom to be on the loose.

In other words, only with consistent effort over a significant period will build up the experience to create and thrive on your terms.

But all beginning do really suck. There is no way around it. Take your daily routine by the hand while you walk together in baby steps. Let go too early and chances are it will not be able to stand on its own.

With repetitions you naturally create focused consistency

When successful people talk about focus, what they really mean is focus + repetition = consistency.

When we focus, we blur out all the other things that will not help us right now.

And with time, we become what we focus on.

Focus on the wrong thing and you may get frustrated and quit. And we both know you and me don’t quit. So don’t choose the wrong thing.

The secret formula that helps me is this:

What would (insert successful role model) do now?

What would Steven King do right the hell now? I think we all know the answer. Writers gonna write.

How about Simone Biles?

Or Shonda Rhimes?

You know it.

Ambitiously repeat

The path to success is incredibly repetitive.

Not only do you need to overcome this boredom, you are expected to enjoy it. Focus on the journey and so on.

Now it is time to become real.

Having considered all of the above, what is the one thing that you would still pursue no matter what?
